Clear and supple skin is one of the most important parts of looking fresh and feeling confident. How do you achieve that? Through a good skincare routine, of course. But where do you start? What products do you need? Don’t worry; here’s a list of the five most important products in an effective skincare routine.

Properly cleaning your face is the absolute most crucial part of your skincare routine. Think about it, throughout the day your skin is exposed to all sorts of pollutants, dirt and makeup products. Getting rid of all that helps you avoid acne, clogged pores and dullness. Choose a good facial cleanser depending on your skin type and use twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. If you wear makeup, also use a makeup remover or a cleanser that is capable of getting rid of the makeup effectively.

  • Toner

The second part of your skincare routine should be a toner. Toners help balance your complexion and let your skin absorb other products easier by adding some extra nutrients. They provide a good way of including ingredients that aren’t present in your other skincare products. Use your toner after cleansing your face and before adding anything else. Depending on the ingredients in your specific product, use the toner either twice or once a day.

  • Moisturiser

There is a type of moisturiser out there for all skin types. Moisturiser prevents water from being lost through the outer layers of skin, which means they hydrate and soften skin. There are a variety of brand names for different skin types, so choose one that suits you best. If you struggle with dry skin, be extra careful to look for dry skin products to prevent visible and uncomfortable dryness.

  • Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be used year-round and not only when it’s sunny outside. The sun ages our skin rapidly, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles, textural imperfections and even certain kinds of skin cancer. Keep your skin young and healthy by putting on sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside and then reapply every two hours. There are other skincare products like moisturisers that include built-in SPF, which can help you remember to apply it and doesn’t require you to add another step to your routine.

  • Exfoliation

Exfoliating once a week removes dead skin cells, contributes to a healthy glow, and helps get rid of dirt and debris in your pores which might have been missed by the cleanser. It will also make your other products get into the skin better, and if you regularly wear makeup, then it will help your makeup sit better since your skin will be smoother and your pores less clogged. Exfoliating shouldn’t be done too often, so once or twice a week is usually enough, and it can be done with a number of different products. You can use an exfoliating mask, scrub or peel, or just a loofah. Try a few different ones to see what works best for you.
